preparing for a clinical evaluation

Physicians most likely to evaluate and treat PMDD include primary care doctors, obstetricians/ gynecologists, and psychiatrists. Nurse practitioners also evaluate and treat PMDD. Who you should see really depends on the type of symptoms you have, your degree of comfort with a particular clinician and the particular experience a clinician has dealing with PMDD.

Clinical evaluation may involve more than one doctor and is likely to include:

  1. A detailed history of your premenstrual symptoms
  2. A complete medical and psychiatric history, including medications you are taking
  3. A physical examination
  4. Laboratory tests to exclude the possibility of other illnesses
  5. Prospective daily rating of symptoms over 2 or more cycles

If you have already completed the Daily Record of Severity of Problems, take it with you to your appointment.
